  1. Acronym – Seemingly, everyone thinks that every single bunch of initials for something is an acronym. This is decidedly not true. In order for initials to be considered as acronyms they must meet two requirements. First, the initials must be pronounceable as a word, eg. HUD, NASA, SNAFU. Second, the initials must be commonly pronounced as a word. Although The Department of Transportation is often referred to as “DOT” the nickname for the Republican Party (G.O.P.) is never pronounced “GOP.” So, even though it can be pronounced as a word it is still not an acronym. All initials that do not meet both of these requirements are not acronyms. They are “initialisms”
